Chess in schools

Psyon Chess delivers after-school chess clubs in primary schools, alongside its junior clubs in Chislehurst and West Wickham.

What a school club looks like

Sessions follow a structured curriculum interspersed with practice games, puzzles, tactical themes, competitions and tournaments. Children learn new concepts each week and are then encouraged to play them through their own games to reinforce the learning — the right balance between teaching and playing is what keeps them coming back.

These clubs suit complete beginners through to improvers up to an ECF standard rating of 1200. A school can start an after-school chess club or a lunchtime chess club without any existing chess provision: the equipment, the curriculum and the tutor needed to run it are all provided by Psyon Chess.

Running the sessions

Sessions are conducted by an enhanced-DBS-checked tutor and internationally accredited coach from leading chess bodies such as FIDE, ECU, ECF and ChessPlus. See about Psyon Chess for background, and safeguarding for how child protection is handled.
