About Psyon Chess

Psyon Chess exists to foster casual social play and competitive chess locally, and anyone keen to learn, play, compete and enjoy chess is welcome.

Organisation

Psyon Chess is run by an International Arbiter and a coach accredited by leading chess bodies such as FIDE, ECU, ECF and ChessPlus.

An International Arbiter is the highest arbiter title awarded by FIDE, the international world chess body, and is held by people qualified to officiate at top international chess events.

In 2023, Psyon Chess organised and self-funded an International Master (IM) Invitational tournament in London for players seeking an IM title norm — a significantly harder event to orchestrate than a weekend congress, particularly without sponsors, and one that offers local players a route to international titles without leaving the country. A player from a Greater London club took his first IM norm at that event, and went on to become an International Master.

What Psyon Chess runs

Chess tournaments, or congresses as they are popularly known in England

FIDE and ECF-rated tournaments across Greater London, Cambridge, Oxford, Kent, East Kent and Hampshire.

Four junior-only tournaments in Greater London, Cambridge, Oxford and East Kent, as qualifiers to the EJCOA National Youth Finals held each July in Nottinghamshire.

Psyon Chess can also organise local tournaments for clubs and associations that do not have the manpower or the expertise themselves: anchoring the event with suitable arbiters, setting it up and running it, updating rating files, providing equipment and handling all the logistics around it.

The adult club

Psyon Chess Club meets on Thursday evenings in Chislehurst through the league season.

Junior clubs

Junior clubs in Chislehurst and West Wickham for beginners and improvers up to an ECF standard rating of 1200, plus after-school clubs delivered in primary schools in and around Bromley.
